Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City was always going to be a tough task for Chelsea, but it's going to be a whole lot tougher now following news broken earlier today.
This could well be a make or break game for Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge, with speculation rife that failure to win at Wembley will see the Italian’s short spell in charge in London come to an end.
Chelsea were also defeated 6-0 by Sunday’s opponents two weeks prior to the League Cup final this weekend, doing so with first-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks.
The Spaniard was unable to do anything that afternoon to stop the Premier League champions from completely whitewashing his team at the Etihad Stadium and will likely once again be powerless this weekend.
That won’t this time be because of the hopeless nature of his team’s performance, but because he is a doubt for the game due to a hamstring injury, Sarri revealed on Wednesday. Kepa has had a mixed bag of performances in recent weeks, showing signs of real promise combined with other displays that look as if he needs further time to adjust to the Premier League.
As a result, Willy Caballero will likely start in goal for Chelsea this weekend as he looks to stop his former side from lifting the League Cup for a fourth time since 2014, also winning it in back-to-back years.
It is a fixture which Caballero has had success in, starting in the 2016 final victory over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, saving three penalties from Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana.
He will need to produce a similarly miraculous performance this weekend to keep out City this weekend, with Sunday’s foes scoring 15 goals in each of their last four games in all competitions prior to their Champions League clash against Schalke.
Chelsea supporters have since taken to Twitter to give their view on the injury, with there being a mixture of reactions to the news.
