Manchester United ended their Champions League group stage campaign with defeat in Valencia. The Red Devils went into the clash at the Mestalla knowing that a win coupled with a defeat for Juventus against Young Boys would seal progression through to the round of 16 as group winners, which could in-turn secure a much more favourable draw along with a home second leg. But with a huge Premier League game to come against Liverpool on Sunday, Mourinho opted to ring the changes with 8 new faces coming into the side.
They ended up going down to a frustrating 2-1 defeat which was made even worse by Juventus losing by the same scoreline - meaning that a win in Spain would've ensured top spot. But in typical United 18/19 fashion they put in an underwhelming performance which was also coupled with some bad luck. Phil Jones scored a comical own goal to put Valencia 2-0 up but before that Paul Pogba missed an absolute sitter which left both him and his teammates stunned.
The Frenchmen was making just his 2nd start in 4 games and he was under pressure to deliver to a positive display in a bid to break in Mourinho's plans for the trip to Anfield on Sunday - but his chances wouldn't have been helped by this. Following a United corner, Pogba was at the near post waiting to tap in a knockdown from Marouane Fellaini but he somehow managed to drag it wide. He was completely unmarked and he looked flabbergasted after somehow missing the target, something which ended up being crucial as Valencia went 2-0 up just 13 minutes later.
