WATCH: Syria awarded penalty after player is tripped up by own teammate!

VAR is just a matter of time away from being introduced at the highest level of football and, by all accounts, the consensus appears to be that it is needed.

It has been trialled on a number of occasions, most recently coming to the fore during the recent meeting between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium.

Elsewhere, it was used in the World Cup finals in Russia last year and the experiment was, for the most part, a success. Despite initial scepticism, it now seems opinion is swaying towards introducing VAR at the top level of the game.

If you were to ask Australian football fans, they would likely all be in agreement following the recent decision to have gone against them in their Asian Cup match with Syria. With the score being 2-1 in favour of the Socceroos, Syria were then handed an extremely controversial penalty after one of their players went down in the box.

What the referee didn’t manage to notice, is that the player went down off the back of contact from his own teammate, which lead to Syria making it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go. Fortunately, for the referee’s sake, Australia managed to go on and win the game thanks to a 93rd minute winner from Tom Rogic.

Watch below to see the moment the officials made a huge mistake with just 10 minutes of the match left.
