Hashtag United was started by social media influencer and YouTuber Spencer Owen back in 2016. Spencer Owen is a big player in the YouTube scene and boasts an impressive following of around 2 million subscribers. As a YouTube he has risen to fame through his charismatic and unique videos on FIFA and real life events. Spencer is the owner of the YouTube channel Hashtag United where he uploads highlights and behind the scenes action from all their games.
Up until this point, Hashtag United have played their games sporadically with no real schedule. Playing against fellow YouTube teams, football staff teams, sport companies such as Pitchero and Top Eleven. In recent games they've tested themselves against aspiring countries Panjab FC and Barawa, who were warming up for the CONIFA World Cup.
Hashtag United have toured all round the world, playing games in America, Serbia, Spain and many more. They've created a large fanbase and Spencer Owen has been careful when releasing the whereabouts to their games for security and safety concerns.
Through Spencer Owen has teamed up with the likes of Coca Cola in the past to help with their trips and are currently sponsored by Top Eleven. Mobile company EE have also been involved with him and has allowed Hashtag United to play at Wembley Stadium twice already making it a very attractive club to be involved with.
Making the move into the football pyramid
The current Hashtag United team is made out of fellow YouTubers and friends Spencer Owen has made throughout his life. As a team they manage to win almost every game they play. However, it is clear that they will not be able to compete at this level and will need to make a number of signings if not a whole squad if they wish to poses any competition. They've already have their own academy side, which they can dip into with some good young players already involved at the club but recruitment will be key for them.
With such a large YouTube following it is doubtful they will struggle for crowd numbers and will be playing their home games at Coles Park Stadium in North London. They will be stadium sharing with Haringey Borough. Hashtag is the first club of its kind making the move from YouTube stars to semi-professional footballers and it will be exciting to see how they get on.
