Manchester City vs Newcastle United Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips

Despite their recent defeat to Real Madrid, we expect Manchester City to emerge victorious here as they are facing a Newcastle side that haven't won at the Etihad Stadium since a League Cup tie back in October 2014. The Magpies last league victory in the blue half of Manchester was all the way back in September 2000.

Pep Guardiola’s men have only suffered two league defeats at the Etihad Stadium this campaign, despite their woes, seeing them pick up 23 points from 11 matches, scoring 24 times while conceding 15. We expect the Both Teams to Score market to land here due to the Cityzens offensive and defensive records, on top of the fact that Newcastle average just shy of two goals per game on the road with 22 in 12 games.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-2 Newcastle

Manchester City vs Newcastle Prediction & Preview

Fifth-place Manchester City goes head-to-head with Newcastle United in a crucial Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.

Date: 15/02/2025

Location: Etihad Stadium

Time: 3pm

Manchester City come into this game ahead of Newcastle via goals scored, as they have found the back of the net 46 times to the Magpies 42 - both sides currently sit on 41 points from 24 matches with a 13 goal difference.

This is the second time that these two sides have met this campaign, having played out a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park on 28th September back when City were favourites to win what would be their fifth Premier League title in a row, a feat that looks highly unlikely as they currently trail league leaders Liverpool by 15 points.

During the aforementioned meeting, Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol scored the opening goal of the game for Manchester City in the 35th-minute with a tidy right-footed finish inside Newcastle's penalty area, before Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot for the Magpies in the 58th-minute.

Two excellent forwards will be facing off during this clash at the Etihad Stadium, as Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak vie for the status of being the best striker in the Premier League. The two ex-Borussia Dortmund strikers are in excellent form, as Haaland has scored 19 goals in 24 matches, while Isak trails just behind with 17 goals in 22 games. Only Mohamed Salah sits ahead of the aforementioned two in the Premier League goalscoring charts having found the back of the net 21 times in 23 appearances.

Guardiola’s side will know that Champions League qualification is a must having had a below-par campaign to date. The Cityzens were knocked out of the League Cup by Tottenham in the Fourth Round, while also looking likely to be exiting the Champions League at the Round of 32 phase at the hands of Real Madrid following their 3-2 loss in the first-leg at the Etihad Stadium - a large part of this can be attributed to their shoddy Group Stage performance that saw them finish in 22nd-place.

The Sky Blues will now likely have to focus on the FA Cup if they are to pick-up any silverware; so far in that competition, they have had a fortuitous draw, as they have defeated the likes of Salford City 8-0 and Leyton Orient 2-1 and will now face Plymouth Argyle in the Fifth Round.

Newcastle memorably advanced to the final of the League Cup, as they thrashed Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals, having also progressed past Brentford (3-1), Chelsea (2-0), AFC Wimbledon (1-0) and Nottingham Forest (4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw).

Meanwhile, the Magpies have also qualified for the Fifth Round of the FA Cup where they’ll play Brighton & Hove Albion at St. James’ Park after beating Birmingham City (3-2) and Bromley (3-1) in previous rounds.

Where to Watch

This game will not be broadcast live in the UK due to 3pm blackout laws, however, BBC Radio 5 Live Sport will be providing Radio Commentary of the game itself.

Form Guide

Manchester City

Manchester City enter this game off the back of a dramatic loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s men suffered a 3-2 defeat in the first leg of the Round of 32 as they blew a 2-1 lead with just ten minutes of normal time as Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham fired in late goals to win the game for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Prior to that game, City were ran close by Leyton Orient in the FA Cup as they scraped a narrow 2-1 win at Brisbane Road thanks to goals by Rico Lewis and Kevin De Bruyne. This victory came after a humiliating 5-1 defeat away at Arsenal as well as back-to-back wins over Club Brugge and Chelsea.

Newcastle United

Eddie Howe’s men also earned a hard-fought victory in the FA Cup against League One opposition, as the Magpies beat Birmingham City 3-2 at St. Andrew’s thanks to goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson (2).

Last weekend’s win came after they beat Arsenal 2-0 in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final in the aftermath of shock home defeats to Fulham (2-1) and AFC Bournemouth (4-1) on either side of a 3-1 win at Southampton.
