Portugal make the trip to Russia quietly confident that they can go and lift the World Cup for the first time in their history. Led by Fernando Santos, Portugal have a team full of stars that are more than capable of going all the way in the summer. This Portuguese side already has legendary status after winning their first ever major tournament in France back in 2016, lifting the European Championships in Paris.
Not many tipped them to go all the way that summer with their odds very big and it’s the same again this time round. Portugal are available at big odds of 25/1 to go all the way this year which makes them an outsider bet but they could represent decent value for money.
Portugal’s route to the World Cup finals wasn’t an easy one, with them winning Group B of European qualification on the final match day ahead of Switzerland on just goal difference. The European Champions claimed 27 points from a possible 30 but their outrageous GD of +28 (as opposed to their opponents’ +16) was enough for them to automatically book their place in Russia. It was a pretty productive campaign for Santos’ men which saw some new stars come to the fold and support Cristiano Ronaldo – with the likes of Bernardo Silva and Andre Silva really impressing.
When it comes to betting on the World Cup and Portugal there are some decent odds, with their opening group game against Spain providing just that. Portugal are already tipped at a big 16/5 to beat the 2010 World Cup Champions which is a big ask but it looks pretty good on paper. But if they are to defeat their rivals they’ll need to improve considerably on their previous showing at the World Cup finals back in 2014, where they exited the tournament at the group stage in Brazil. They won just one of their three games in South America so it’s added a bit of pressure on them to perform in Russia 2018.
