USA vs Brazil: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

USA take on Brazil in a final friendly game before the pair begin their Copa America journeys, looking to go deep into the tournament.

            Date: 13/06/24

            Kick-off time: 00:00

            Venue: Camping World Stadium

This friendly will provide both managers the opportunity to take a last look at their squads before the tournament begins. Equally, players will be hoping to impress and push for positions in the team. As the host country, USA will be desperate to go deep into the tournament in front of their own fans. The last time they were in the competition was in 2016, in which they were eliminated in the semi-final by Argentina, before ultimately finishing fourth. This is the furthest they have gone. After winning the CONCACAF Nations League in March, the team will be looking to add a second trophy of the year to their cabinet.

Brazil have plenty of talent in their team, but there are some question marks surrounding the team, and they come into this tournament in poor form having won just two of their last seven games, so they will be desperate to pick up another against USA to go into the tournament on a high. They will be hoping to win their 10th Copa America final, and go one step further than they did last time after they were defeated 1-0 in the final by Argentina.

Despite the number of quality attacking threats Brazil possess, they have been mostly inconsistent in front of goal in recent months. Their last two games saw them score three against Spain, and then another three against Mexico, but they only scored two in the four games prior. Their most dangerous outlet is likely to be Vinicius Jr, with his Real Madrid teammate Rodrygo providing support. For their club, the pair have combined for 36 goals in all competitions. USA will likely lean on talisman Christian Pulisic, who has enjoyed an excellent season with AC Milan, scoring 15 goals.

There have been 19 meetings between USA and Brazil in history, and it is a head-to-head which has been overwhelmingly dominated by the Brazilians. They have won 18 of these games, losing just once, a CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final in 1998, which USA won 1-0. This means that Brazil are currently in the midst of an 11-game winning streak, with the last game coming in an international friendly in 2018. Brazil were 2-0 winners, with Roberto Firmino opening the scoring before Neymar added a second from the penalty spot.

            USA

Christian Pulisic headlines a strong USA squad. There is also Premier League representation through Fulham pair Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson, as well as Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner amongst others.

            Brazil

            Form Guide

            USA

In their last five games, USA have won two and lost three. It has been an inconsistent stretch for USA, despite them winning the CONCACAF Nations League final. They did so by beating Mexico 2-0 in the final. It was a tight game in terms of possession, but USA were able to break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time through Tyler Adams. Giovanni Reyna doubled their lead midway through the second half to win the trophy.

They made it to the final with a 4-2 aggregate victory against Trinidad & Tobago over two legs in the quarter-final, before beating Jamaica in the semis. After winning the first leg 3-0, they were in a strong position heading into the second. However, the second leg ended in a 2-1 defeat, though they took the lead. Sergino Dest saw red, which allowed Trindad to turn it around but it was not enough to threaten a comeback in the tie.

This set up a one-legged semi-final tie with Jamaica. They were 3-1 winners, but did so in dramatic fashion. Greg Leigh gave Jamaica a first minute lead, a lead they held until deep in second half stoppage time. USA equalised right at the death through an own goal, before taking the game away in extra-time with a Haji Wright brace. Between the quarter-final and semi-final, USA played in a friendly against Slovenia, in which they lost 1-0 at home. Nejc Gradisar scored the winner in the first half. Their most recent game was a friendly against Colombia, in which they lost 5-1. They fell 2-0 behind to goals from Jhon Arias and Rafael Santos Borre Maury, before Timothy Weah pulled one back. Colombia took the game away with three late goals from Richard Rios, Jorge Carrascal and Luis Sinisterra.

            Brazil

In their last five games, Brazil have won two, lost two and drawn one. It has been a mixed run of form for Brazil as they look ahead to the Copa America. This stretch began with two consecutive defeats, the first of which being a 2-1 loss at Colombia. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli gave them an early fourth minute lead, but Luis Diaz of Liverpool scored two in four second half minutes to flip the game on its head. The hosts had 10 shots on target as the Brazilians struggled at the back.

Their second loss in a row came against rivals Argentina as they were defeated 1-0. There was not much to split the two teams, but Nicolas Otamendi’s 63rd minute goal proved the difference. Joelinton saw red late for Brazil. They responded well with a 1-0 victory against England at Wembley. Seventeen-year old Endrick stole the headlines as he scored his first goal for the country in the win.

They then played in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Spain. Rodri put their opponents ahead from the penalty spot, and Dani Olmo doubled their advantage. Rodrygo pulled one back before the break. The equaliser came shortly after the restart through Endrick. Spain thought they snatched victory with another Rodri spot kick, but Lucas Paqueta converted a penalty deep into stoppage time. Their most recent game was a friendly with Mexico, in which they won 3-2, with goals from Andreas Pereira, Martinelli and a 96th minute winner by Endrick.
