Cheltenham vs Peterborough: Alfie May to score and Cheltenham to win - 7/2

Our final League One tip sees another relegated side in Peterborough United take on Cheltenham on the opening day.

Despite a midtable finish for Cheltenham last season, they were the 12th-highest scoring team in the league with 66, and striker Alfie May scored 23 of those goals.

The Robins have managed to keep May for the new season, and we expect May to have another impressive campaign in front of goal – facing Peterborough in the opening game will be helpful for May, as Posh had the joint-worst goals conceded record in the Championship last season (87), and they also had the worst goal difference in the league as well (-44).

We expect Cheltenham to definitely score in this game and take advantage of Peterborough’s poor defence.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Portsmouth: Both teams to score - 4/5

The first of our tips for the new League One season sees Portsmouth travel to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday finished 4th last season and qualified for the play-offs but ultimately failed to earn promotion, so they will be looking to make a strong start to their campaign for promotion this season by winning this game.

We expect both teams to score in this game - Darren Moore’s men scored 78 goals last season, whilst Pompey managed to score 68 so this a match between two sides that are good at scoring.

Both Wednesday and Portsmouth also conceded a lot of goals last season (50 and 51 respectively), so this combination of good goalscoring combined with leaky defences means that this should be a match full of goals.

Derby County vs Oxford United: Oxford to win - 6/5

Our second tip sees Championship-relegated Derby County host Oxford United in their opening game of the season, and we expect Oxford to secure a win in this one.

Oxford had a relatively impressive campaign last season, scoring the joint-most goals in League One last season (82), picking up 22 wins and amassing 76 points.

Their star man Matty Taylor managed to score 20 last season, and we expect him to carry on this form into the new season, and what will help him is the fact that this is a Derby side still in some trouble after a challenging campaign last season – so that is why we think Oxford will win here.

Northampton vs Colchester: Both teams to Score - 1/1

Our first League Two tip involves Northampton and Colchester, with the sides set to face each other at Sixfields Stadium on Saturday.

Northampton impressed last season as they finished in fourth place, but they were unable to secure promotion and so that will be on their minds in this opening game – a strong start is important as The Cobblers will be looking to challenge for promotion once again.

But they will face a tough test in Colchester, whose dangerman Freddie Sears knows how to put the ball into the back of the net – the Englishman scored 17 goals in all competitions last season. Northampton’s main man is Sam Hoskins, who got 14 goals last season – we can see both teams scoring here.

Leyton Orient vs Grimsby: Full-time result to be a draw - 23/10

Our second League Two tip involves Leyton Orient and newly promoted Grimsby, and we can see this game finishing in a draw.

Leyton Orient finished in 13th last season, picking up 58 points after 14 wins, 16 draws and 16 losses – a relatively unimpressive season.

We can see this being another midtable finish for them this season, and they take on a promoted Grimsby side who will be looking to get a strong start and get some points on the board straightaway – but it will take The Mariners some time to get used to the higher quality of the league as opposed to the National League – so we don’t see much to separate these two and that’s why we predict a draw.
