          Brentford vs Southampton: Prediction

Both teams have endured contrasting fortunes so far this season, and we expect Southampton’s woes to continue with another defeat. Brentford have the upper hand in this fixture, having won the last three meetings between the two sides. In these three games, the Bees have been perfect at the back, keeping a clean sheet in all of them.

On the other hand, Southampton have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last six against Brentford, and they have allowed the first goal in five of the last six. However, the Saints have lost both of their first two games of the campaign by just a single goal, so look for them to deliver a similar defensive display this weekend. They will make it tough on Brentford, but we are backing the hosts to prevail – Brentford 2-0 Southampton

Brentford vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

Southampton make the trip to West London to take on Brentford, as they seek their first points of the Premier League season.

          Date: 31/08/24

          Kick-off time: 15:00

          Venue: Gtech Community Stadium

After their promotion via the playoffs last season, Southampton’s main aim for this campaign is to avoid relegation and remain in the division. It has been a very difficult start so far, with the Saints losing both of their opening games 1-0 to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. It makes this upcoming fixture with Brentford a crucial one with a game against Man United to follow. With a loss, they risk falling behind very early and being unable to build any momentum.

Manager Russell Martin can take positives from their start, however, as they have been able to remain in games with their defensive solidity. However, their struggles in attack are highlighted by the fact they have mustered a combined five shots on target in these two games. Adam Armstrong is a key man they will need to get going, as the forward led the way for the club last year with 24 goals. They lost their second highest scorer in Che Adams over the summer, but brought in the likes of Cameron Archer and Ben Brereton Diaz to boost their attacking options.

They will face a tough task away at Brentford, who are hoping to put a poor season behind them. The Bees won their first game 2-1 against Crystal Palace, despite being without striker Ivan Toney, who continues to be linked with a move away. They fell to a 2-0 defeat in their second, though it was a very tricky trip to Anfield against Liverpool.

In the absence of Toney, forward duo Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa have stepped up, scoring in their opening day victory. The pair led the way for the club last season, and have already continued where they left off. At home, they should prove to be a handful for the visiting defence and will be key to any Brentford success.

This will be just the fifth Premier league meeting between these two sides. Brentford have been the superior team, winning three games in a row, looking to make it a fourth this weekend. The first top flight fixture between the pair ended convincingly in the favour of the Saints as they won 4-1 at home. Vitaly Janelt cancelled out an early opener, but Southampton struck three more times to take all three points. However, it has gone the way of the Bees ever since. Thomas Frank’s side have scored eight and conceded zero in their three victories. The most recent fixture was a 2-0 win for Brentford at St Mary’s in March 2023. Toney and Wissa were the goalscorers.

          Team News

          Brentford

Ivan Toney missed out on the squad again last weekend as he continues to be linked with a move away, with him unlikely to feature in this game. Joshua Dasilva, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are long-term absentees and remain out.

          Southampton

Kamaldeen Sulemana has missed the start of the season after suffering an injury in pre-season. His return should be on the horizon, though it remains to be seen if this weekend’s fixture will come too soon. Manager Russell Martin has no new injury concerns to deal with.

          Form Guide

          Brentford:

In their last five games, Brentford have won one, lost two and drawn two. It was a difficult end to pre-season for the Bees, but they made a great start to the campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Crystal Palace. Bryan Mbeumo gave them the lead, before an Ethan Pinnock own goal levelled the score. Yoanne Wissa netted the winner with 14 minutes to go.

A tricky trip to Anfield followed, and the hosts proved too much for them as they lost 2-0. Luis Diaz and Mo Salah scored either side of half-time to condemn them to defeat.

Their final friendly fixture was a 4-4 thriller against German side Wolfsburg. They squandered a two-goal lead which they got through Mbeumo and Wissa before going in front twice more. Wolfsburg were able to respond both times. This followed a 1-1 draw with Watford. Kevin Schade gave Brentford the lead, but they could not hold on for long as Moussa Sissoko levelled it. Portuguese side Estrela Amadora condemned them to a 3-1 defeat in their last pre-season game.

          Southampton:

In their last five games, Southampton have won one, lost two and drawn two. It was a difficult start to life back in the Premier League for the Saints, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle, despite playing against 10 men for the majority of the game. Fabian Schar was sent off midway through the first half for violent conduct, but the hosts still took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Joelinton. Southampton were unable to take advantage of their extra man in the second half.

Last time out, they took on Nottingham Forest, and again fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat. They enjoyed the majority of the possession but managed just one shot on target. Forest took one of their opportunities with Morgan Gibbs-White netting the winner with 20 minutes to go.

This run of games began with pre-season friendlies, as they won one and drew two to conclude their preparations. The first one was their sole victory, a 1-0 win away at Millwall. They followed this with a 1-1 result with Italian side Lazio, before holding La Liga’s Getafe to a goalless draw.
