The weekend’s Premier League fixtures are almost certain to be focused on the relegation picture as the final weeks of the campaign approaches. Luton Town hopes their Premier League story embarks on another chapter as they host a Brentford side who are assured of their Premier League status for another season.
Location: Kenilworth Road
Date: 20/04/24
Kick-off: 3:00 pm
Luton Town are well within the battle to avoid relegation with five games to go, with many expecting them to perhaps be relegated at this stage of the season. The Hatters go into this game inside the bottom three after 33 games played and with an inferior goal difference to Nottingham Forest and Everton above them.
A win over Brentford will move Rob Edwards's side above either Nottingham Forest or Everton because of those two teams are scheduled to face each other at the same weekend.
The Hatters are in the bottom three as mentioned, with 25 points from 33 games played – which averages at 0.75 points per game. The positive note for the home team is that they have scored more goals than the teams they are competing against. Luton Town have scored 46 goals this season, which is an average of 1.39 goals per game. The hosts have also scored 14 more goals than Everton and four more than Nottingham Forest.
Their defensive issues though have been concerning to their current position in the league. The hosts have conceded 70 goals in 33 games this season-averaging 2.1 goals conceded per game. Luton Town currently has the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League; only Sheffield United has a worse record.
It is worth noting that Luton Town have a particularly decent record for scoring late against their opposition. In their last three league games where they have obtained points, they recorded late goals against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Crystal Palace. Luton Town have scored 18 of their 46 goals this season in the last 15 minutes of regulation time.
The away side, Brentford, is on course to record another season in the top flight of English football, despite possibly being involved in the relegation battle earlier on this season. A win for Brentford would strengthen their position in the Premier League for next season and it will open an 11-point gap between the two teams in this game with four games to play.
Brentford’s season has been dampened with injuries, amongst other factors that have affected their form this season. Bryan Mbuemo and the long-term absence of Ivan Toney have given Thomas Frank issues but since their return, Brentford now look assured for another campaign comfortably safe from relegation. The Bees are currently 14th as it stands, with Crystal Palace two points behind with two games in hand. Crystal Palace play Liverpool in one of their remaining fixtures. If Brentford beat Luton Town at the weekend wouldn’t impact their league position as they are currently seven points behind Fulham.
Thomas Frank’s side have obtained 32 points from 33 games – which gives them an average of 0.9 points per game. Brentford has the advantage in his game when it comes to goals conceded having only conceded 12 less than their opposition.
Despite the absences of Toney and Mbeumo, the Bees have scored 47 goals in 33 games – which gives them an average of 1.4 goals scored per game. Most of Brentford’s goals have come between the 16th and 30th-minute mark. Brentford have conceded 14 goals in the latter stages of games. Defensively, Brentford as mentioned have conceded 58 goals this season and they currently have the joint fourth-worst defence in the league. The Bees have conceded on average 1.75 goals per game.
