Wolves vs. Manchester United: Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips

One of Boxing Day's more intriguing Premier League fixtures takes place at Molineux, where Wolves lock horns with Manchester United.

      • Date: 26/12/2024
      • Kick-off time: 17:30
      • Location: Molineux, Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently 18th in the Premier League with 12 points from 17 games. It's been a tough campaign for Wolves so far, whose first few months of the season were so poor that they were forced to part ways with manager Gary O'Neil. It reached a point under O'Neil where performances were so bad that there was little justification for his continuation in the role, which is exemplified by the fact that they've conceded a whopping 40 goals in the league, more than any other side. Wolves' defensive performances have been embarrassing at times, and it will be a point of targeted improvement for new manager Vítor Pereira.

It's a good job, then, that in Pereira's first game in charge, Wolves kept a clean sheet and surged to a thumping win over Leicester, suggesting that this team may not be completely doomed, as many Wolves fans had thought. The squad is still fairly brimming with quality, so if Pereira can put the pieces together, we may see Wolves embark upon a period of sustained improvement in the coming weeks.

They now have a huge chance to make it two wins in a row against a faltering Manchester United side, a team that are also looking for sustained improvement under a new manager.

United, though, have had little luck in that department, as the Red Devils find themselves battling with similar issues despite having changed their manager. They currently find themselves 13th in the league table with 22 points from 17 games, and under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United look almost as abject as they did under Erik ten Hag, which has really underscored just how long it's going to take to get the club competing again.

Amorim's arrival has made one thing clear, though: the players are not up to scratch. Not all of the players, but a huge portion of this United squad is not of the required quality to compete at a good level in the Premier League, and there can be no illusions about the issues stemming from the manager in charge, given the same problems are repeatedly rearing their head, regardless of who is in the dugout.

It already looks as though a rebuild is imminent, with Marcus Rashford's days at Old Trafford now looking numbered after the forward publicly expressed a desire to leave. Other players will follow Rashford out of the door, no doubt, but with INEOS seemingly reluctant to spend big, it could yet take quite a while to perform the necessary amount of surgery on this squad.

After a poor run of results in the league, United need a win here, but as they're facing a side buoyed by the bounce of a new manager, they likely have another very tricky contest in store.

      Team News

      Wolves Team News:

The home side will once again be missing Pablo Sarabia, Boubacar Traoré, Saša Kalajdžić, Yerson Mosquera and Enso González.

After a thumping win at the weekend, Wolves could start this game unchanged from how they lined up at the King Power.

Predicted lineup: Sá; Doherty, Bueno, T. Gomes; Semedo, André, J. Gomes, R. Gomes; Guedes, Cunha; Larsen.

      Manchester United Team News:

The Red Devils are still missing Luke Shaw, while Mason Mount is once again out injured. Matthijs de Ligt and Victor Nilsson Lindelöf are also doubtful for this one, which could pave the way for Leny Yoro to come in from the start.

Rasmus Højlund should also be in line for a recall, with Joshua Zirkzee in danger of dropping out of the team.

Predicted lineup: Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Malacia; Diallo, Fernandes; Højlund.

Wolves vs. Manchester United - Form Guide

      Wolves:

Wolves' form on the whole is still very poor, with one win and four losses from their last five. They did win resoundingly at the weekend though, where goals from Gonçalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes and Matheus Cunha secured a 3-0 win away at Leicester City.

That result followed a 1-2 loss at home to Ipswich Town, where a last-minute goal from Ipswich's Jack Taylor secured the points, which came after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

Before that, Wolves were hammered 4-0 away at Everton, which followed a 2-4 loss to Bournemouth, where Jorgen Strand Larsen scored both goals.

      Manchester United:

Manchester United are coming off the back of a poor 0-3 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, with Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo scoring the goals for the Cherries.

Prior to that, United lost 4-3 away at Spurs in the League Cup, where despite falling 3-0 down, they fought back to make it 3-2 through Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo, before Spurs restored their two-goal cushion.

Successive wins preceded that game, where late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Diallo secured a 2-1 win away at Manchester City, which came after a 2-1 win away at Viktoria Plzen thanks to a Rasmus Højlund brace.

Those results followed a 2-3 loss to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, where Højlund and Fernandes scored the goals.

Wolves vs. Manchester United - Prediction

Both teams are faltering defensively, as Wolves have the worst defensive record in the league with 40 goals conceded and Manchester United failing to keep a clean sheet in their previous six. Goals will be a custom in this game, with Over 2.5 goals scored in the last six involving the hosts and in the last five involving Manchester United.

Manchester United will probably have the edge in this game, with the Red Devils winning the last four meetings between the two sides and Wolves winless in their previous two home games, following their 2-1 defeat to Ipswich last time at Molineux. Wolves 1-2 Manchester United.
