League One leaders Wigan Athletic host Arsenal’s Under 21s at the DW Stadium in the EFL Trophy quarter-finals.
The Latics come into this match in great form having won all of their last five matches, hammering Oldham Athletic 6-0 at Boundary Park in the last round of the competition, before managing an impressive 3-2 home win over local rivals Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. Leam Richardson’s men’s last three victories have all came in the league having defeated Doncaster Rovers and Morecambe by 2-1 scorelines, as well as Gillingham 3-2 last time out.
Arsenal’s youngsters have impressed throughout their run in thei competition, having progressed through a group consisting of Swindon Town, Newport County and Plymouth Argyle with four points, following a 4-3 away win at the Exiles and a 1-1 draw at Home Park against Argyle after losing their opening match 2-1 at Swindon.
Steve Bould is currently the Gunners Under 21s coach and will have been delighted to see his team beat Ipswich Town at Portman Road on penalties, having come from 2-0 down before a Kane Vincent-Young own goal and Folarin Balogun strike levelled the scores to set up a tie with Chelsea’s Under 21s who they thumped 4-1 in the Round of 16.
