Bolton Wanderers are eyeing up second spot in League One with the club failing to win one of their games in hand and now sitting adrift of Portsmouth by seven points in their pursuit of first place with Cambridge United up next.
Bolton have had games in hand to play on those around them for some time, but they lost their recent one with Wigan Athletic due to a goal from Stephen Humphrys in the second half of a 1-0 win.
They do still have one extra game to play on Derby County in second and Portsmouth in first, but with Barnsley right behind them now with a three-point gap and a game extra to play alongside their superior goals difference, there is also a chance Bolton drop into fourth. Nevertheless, should they continue to match Derby's results, the club will be in second place and be staring down the barrel of a return to the Championship after many tough year sin the third tier.
The recent defeat to Wigan did also see the Wanderers lose for the second game in a row after a defeat away to Blackpool that saw them smashed 4-1. The only win in the past few weeks for Bolton was, oddly enough, in a 2-1 away win against Cambridge United that saw Paris Maghoma and Carlos Mendes Gomes score a goal each alongside an own goal from Eoin Toal that saw Cambridge take an early lead.
In truth, it was a poor February for Bolton and their hopes of a spot in the automatic promotion places took a huge hit. The club also managed to draw 3-3 with Charlton Athletic and 1-1 with both Barnsley and Northampton Town.
Cambridge themselves lost during the week in a 1-0 loss away to Stevenage, and they remain slumped into 16th in what has been a season with barely anything to shout about. They have, as mentioned, already lost to Bolton, and such results in recent weeks keep the U's above the relegation zone by only six points. Worse yet, they've won only one of their past five games and now lost the four other fixtures to put them on a record of only three points from February.
