England U21s travel to take on Azerbaijan in the latest round of the groups stage for 2025 European Championship qualification.
Date: 22/03/24
Kick-off time: 12:00
Venue: Azersun Arena
Both of these teams will be desperate for a win to strengthen their chances of qualifying for next year’s European Championships. England are in a much stronger position of the two, as they sit second in group F, three points behind leaders Ukraine. This is definitely a must win for Azerbaijan as they occupy fourth, with just one win. However, they do have a game in hand, so victory on Friday would keep their faint hopes of qualification alive. Defeat would all but end their pursuit.
A win for England could put them level on points with Ukraine, depending on their result. At worst, they would maintain their place in second and put them in a great position to qualify. A loss could open the door for the teams below them.
During this qualifying campaign, the Three Lions have lost just once, a last gasp winner condemning them to a 3-2 defeat against Ukraine. In five games, they have scored 20 goals, by far the most in the group. This was helped by a huge 9-1 win against Serbia. Azerbaijan have lost three of their four games, though haven’t been leaking goals, letting in six.
Harvey Elliott has been the joint top scorer during qualification with five, and he is in the squad looking to add to this tally in the upcoming fixtures. Chelsea’s Noni Madueke has scored three and will also be a big goal threat for Lee Carsley’s men. His side have also allowed just four goals, and will be confident of keeping a clean sheet against a team who have found the back of the net only three times.
This will be the first ever meeting between Azerbaijan and England at U21 level.
