            Liverpool vs Brentford Prediction

Liverpool return home for their first game of the season at Anfield looking to build on their opening day win over Ipswich. We are backing them to do so, against a Brentford side who also recorded a victory last weekend.

The Reds are in good form dating back to last season as they are unbeaten in their last 10 games. Brentford’s victory over Crystal Palace was their first win in five including pre-season. Arne Slot’s side have the edge in the recent head-to-head, with wins in each of the last three meetings.

They should have confidence in troubling the Bees’ defence, with the visitors failing to keep a clean sheet in their last six against Liverpool. Going forward, Mo Salah has been a thorn in Brentford’s side, scoring in each of his last three appearances against them. He and Diogo Jota both scored last weekend, so look for them to have some more success – Liverpool 3-0 Brentford

Liverpool vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

Brentford travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool on the second weekend of the Premier League season. Both sides enjoyed winning starts to the campaign.

            Date: 25/08/24

            Kick-off time: 16:30

            Venue: Anfield

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot takes charge of his first game at Anfield as he and his side look to continue their winning start to the season. It was a 2-0 victory away at newly promoted Ipswich to kick start their new era following the departure of Jurgen Klopp over the summer. Last season, the Reds finished third in the table, ending seven points behind runners-up Arsenal and nine behind champions Man City.

The hosts have yet to make any signings for their new manager, coming into the campaign with the same squad as last year. It remains to be seen how many, if any, they bring in before the end of the window, but despite their lack of activity, they still have plenty of talent to remain competitive towards the top of the table. Mo Salah led the way with 18 goals last season, and he hit the ground running once more this time around with a goal and assist in the opener. Diogo Jota scored the other goal, and should he stay fit, will also be a key figure in attack.

They face a Brentford side looking to put an underwhelming season behind them. Eventually finishing 16th, the Bees spent the majority of the season amongst the bottom sides, but ended 13 points clear of relegation. There has been plenty of transfer speculation surrounding striker Ivan Toney, and he was left out of their squad last weekend with a move seemingly on the way. In their opening game, they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at home, and will be hoping to build on this momentum. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoanne Wissa stepped up in Toney’s absence, leading them to victory.

Goals could be a feature in this game, especially with the vulnerabilities the visitors possess at the back. Only six teams conceded more than their 65 last season, and these struggles continued into pre-season. In five games, they allowed 11 goals, before conceding another to Palace last week. Liverpool will expect to take advantage in front of their home fans.

Since Brentford’s promotion to the top flight in 2021, these two sides have met six times. As expected, Liverpool have been the superior team, winning four of these games. The first fixture between the pair was a thrilling 3-3 draw, but Liverpool have won three consecutive games. The latest of those was in February, in which the Reds won 4-1 away from home. Liverpool won the home fixture 3-0, with goals from Salah (x2) and Jota.

            Team News

            Liverpool

Arne Slot should have a fully fit squad to choose from for this game. Joe Gomez could be the only absentee as he missed out last time with the player linked with a transfer away. Jarell Quansah was substituted at half-time last week despite not being injured, a move which could see Ibrahim Konate return to the starting lineup.

            Brentford

Ivan Toney was left out of the squad last weekend as he remains linked with a move away from the club. If his future has not been resolved, expect him to miss out once more. Brentford have no new injuries, but Josh Dasilva, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are still long-term absentees.

            Form Guide

            Liverpool:

In their last five games, Liverpool have won four and drawn one. It was a strong pre-season for the Reds as they enter the campaign with a new man at the helm. They made the perfect start, beating newly promoted Ipswich Town 2-0 away from home. They were held goalless at the break, but second half goals from Diogo Jota and Mo Salah secured the three points.

This run of games started with a friendly against Premier League rivals Arsenal, in which they won 2-1. Salah opened the scoring, before Fabio Carvalho added a second. Kai Havertz halved the deficit prior to the break, but this is how the game ended. They followed this with another victory, this time 3-0 over Man United. Carvalho, Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas were the scorers.

For their final games of pre-season, they used a split squad to play two games in one day. One ended in a goalless draw against Las Palmas, whilst another side beat Sevilla 4-1. Diogo Jota and Trey Nyoni added to a Luis Diaz brace.

            Brentford:

In their last five games, Brentford have won one, lost one and drawn three. It was a difficult end to pre-season for the Bees, but they made a great start to the campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Crystal Palace. Bryan Mbeumo gave them the lead, before an Ethan Pinnock own goal levelled the score. Yoanne Wissa netted the winner with 14 minutes to go.

Their final friendly fixture was a 4-4 thriller against German side Wolfsburg. They squandered a two-goal lead which they got through Mbeumo and Wissa before going in front twice more. Wolfsburg were able to respond both times. This followed a 1-1 draw with Watford. Kevin Schade gave Brentford the lead, but they could not hold on for long as Moussa Sissoko levelled it.

Portuguese side Estrela Amadora condemned them to a 3-1 defeat after they were held 1-1 by Benfica in the first game of this run.
