Newcastle United take on Leeds United at St James’ Park on Friday night with both sides still looking for their first league win of the season.
The Magpies are coming into this match in 19th place, off the back of their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford where they were temporarily level thanks to a neat Javier Manquillo finish in the second half before Cristiano Ronaldo completed a brace whilst strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard put the match beyond any doubt.
Prior to last weekend’s heavy defeat, Steve Bruce’s side had been thumped 4-2 at home to West Ham United on the opening day, as well as 2-0 away at Aston Villa, meaning that they picked up their only point so far this season against Southampton, where they blew the lead despite scoring in the 91st minute through Allan Saint-Maximin, as Jamaal Lascelles fouled Adam Armstrong in the penalty area in the 95th minute, which saw James Ward-Prowse duly convert the spot-kick with virtually the last kick of the game.
Leeds are just one point better off than Newcastle in the league standings and currently sit in 17th place as a result of it. The Elland Road club started the season in disastrous fashion as they were hammered 5-1 by United at Old Trafford, where like Newcastle, they were temporarily level through their right-back Luke Ayling before goals by Mason Greenwood, Fred and a completed Fernandes hattrick completed the scoring.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men had a positive reaction to their heavy defeat, as they drew their next two league matches 2-2 and 1-1 with Everton and Burnley, where a thunderous strike from Brazilian winger Raphinha with just 18 minutes to go saved the Whites from defeat against the Toffees. Last time out, Leeds were soundly beaten by Liverpool 3-0 at Elland Road via Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane goals.
Prediction: Newcastle United 1 – 3 Leeds United 14/1
